New PPAHS Board Member Stresses Importance of Monitoring Patients that are Prescribed Opioids

Gene Gantt, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) was recently named as the newest member of the Physician-Patient Alliance Board of Advisors (PPAHS). The announcement was made by the Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety.

Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety’s objective is to ensure high patient care standards.

Gantt has been an accomplished member of the post-acute care field since 1984 and is known for the high standard of care he delivers. He has been acknowledged for his exemplary performance with critical patient safety concerns.

Gantt has a long list of accomplishments that make him qualified to serve on the Board of Advisors. He attended numerous conferences as a representative for the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) to highlight the necessity of monitoring patients to ensure clinicians are able to recognize respiratory issues immediately.

He was also named the AARC- Long Term Care Practitioner for 2004. He served as a chair for the AARC Long Term Care specialist section from 2008 – 2011 and the Tennessee Board for Respiratory Care from 2013 – 2014. Gantt was also chosen to assist the National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care (NAMDRC) as a member of the Industry Advisory Council.

Gantt is also responsible for implementing core standards of care in Tennessee for skilled nursing institutions, which became part of the TennCare Enhanced Respiratory Care Program in 2010. The standards have since been embraced by the AARC on a national level.

Michael Wong, JD Executive Director for PPAHS called Gantt instrumental to the committee’s goals of making certain patients on opiates receive proper and continuous monitoring. He also said Gantt’s innovativeness will be a welcome addition to the Board.

Gantt is enthusiastic about his new responsibilities and is eager to begin working toward the goal of ensuring all hospitals continuously monitor patients that are being given opioids.
